The U.S. military operation which led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has surprised South America and has led to conversations around the world about the possibility that the United States is at war with Venezuela.

In a dramatic change of events, U.S. military resources conducted a precision operation against a leading Venezuelan official, and Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken into U.S. custody in New York. Who is Nicolás Maduro?

Nicolás Maduro has been the President of Venezuela since 2013. Maduro was hand-picked to be the successor of the former President, Hugo Chavez.
